Some characteristics of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor are temperature-dependent. The higher the temperature is, the more deteriorated the capacitor will be. An increase in tem-perature accelerates the increase in leakage current and tan δ and the decrease in capacitance.
The lifetime of aluminum electrolytic capacitors is affected mainly by the loss of electrolyte as the result of diffusion through the rubber seal materials, which leads to a decrease in capacitance and increase in tanδ.
For aluminum electrolytic capacitors, the capacitance is measured under the standard measuring conditions of 20°C and a 120Hz AC signal of about 0.5V. Generally, as the temperature rises, the capaci-tance increases; as the temperature decreases, the capaci-tance decreases (Fig. 7).
As the temperature of the electrolyte decreases, its viscosity increases resulting in a reduced electrical conductivity. Therefore, the capacitance of aluminum electrolytic capacitors reduces with a decrease in temperature. At low frequencies, the relationship between temperature and capacitance of aluminum electrolytic capacitors is nearly linear.
However, by extending the surface area (S) of the aluminum foil electrode by means of etching, and by electrochemically forming a thinner but highly voltage-withstandable layer of oxide layer dielec-tric, the aluminum electrolytic capacitor can offer a larger CV prod-uct per case size than other types of capacitors.
The impedance of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is dependent on frequency and temperature. It comprises capacitive reactance of the capacitor, ohmic and dielectric losses of the foils, electrolyte, and terminals, and inductive reactance of the capacitor windings.
