Ugandan legend Denis Onyango has described retired Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama as a ‘leader on the pitch’ after he took the decision to hang his boots.

Wanyama made the announcement in a heartfelt message on social media on Friday, saying he had lived his dream and thanking those who supported him throughout his journey.

“Today I announce my retirement from football,” explained Wanyama via a social media statement on Friday.

“Four different countries. Six different clubs. A boy from Muthurwa with a big dream, carrying a nation’s pride every time I stepped onto the pitch.

“To my family, friends, agent, the fans, and the coaching staff that helped me throughout my career. Thank you for walking this journey with me.”

Wanyama became the first-ever Kenyan player to score in the Champions League when he scored the first goal in Celtic’s 2-1 win over Barcelona in 2012.

In 2013, Wanyama moved to Premier League club Southampton for £12.5 million, making him the most expensive player sold by a Scottish club at the time, surpassing the £9.5 million Russian club Spartak Moscow paid for Aiden McGeady in 2010.

On Sunday, the DRC government, through President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi, hosted the Leopards players and coaches to a dinner to congratulate them, according to Actualite news website.

Tshisekedi: ‘Every DRC player has a house and car’

“I promised them that if they qualified for the World Cup, 52 years later, the country would offer them everything their hearts desired. Every Leopard now has a house and a car. It’s already a given. What remains to be determined is the usual bonus they receive after each match,” said the president.

The DRC leader then handed over car keys to the head coach Sébastien Désabre and the national team captain Chancel Mbemba. Every player and staff member walked away with a new car.

The Congolese side will return to the global football showpiece for the first time since 1974 hence the government saw it befitting to recognise the feat of the players.

The Leopards will join fellow Africans Senegal, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Cape Verde, South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and Egypt at the World Cup finals.

At the World Cup to run from June 11 July 19, the DRC will compete from the Group K phase alongside Portugal, Colombia and Uzbekistan.
