World Rugby’s plan to overhaul the TMO system would eliminate host broadcaster influence over key decisions.

The Telegraph reports that the global governing body is trialling a centralised TMO hub that could be rolled out at next year’s World Cup.

The trial began during the Nations Cup (the tournament below the Nations Championship) and Junior World Championship, with all TMOs working remotely from Hawk-Eye’s headquarters in Basingstoke, England, rather than at the match venues.

The new system gives TMOs direct control of every available broadcast angle, assisted by a Hawk-Eye operator, instead of relying on TV directors to provide footage.

One of the key aims is to remove the possibility of broadcaster manipulation – accidental or otherwise – while also ensuring every TMO works with the same technology and experienced operators.

World Rugby also believes the centralised model will improve consistency between matches while reducing officiating costs, as fewer TMOs would be required and officials would no longer need to travel to every venue.

World Rugby has already introduced minimum standards for TMO operations at international level, with all unions required to adopt them before next year’s World Cup.

Under the new requirements, every available camera angle must be accessible to the TMO and foul play review officer, while the referee must receive footage directly from the TMO rather than via the host broadcaster.

Responsibility for selecting the replay angles will also rest with the TMO instead of the TV director.

À deux jours du quart de finale de la Coupe du monde face au Maroc, l’équipe de France poursuit sa préparation avec la conviction d’avoir franchi un cap après son succès difficile contre le Paraguay (1-0).

Présent en conférence de presse lundi, Guy Stéphan a estimé que cette rencontre, particulièrement intense sur le plan physique et mental, pourrait s’avérer bénéfique pour les Bleus.

Après un parcours jusque-là maîtrisé, les hommes de Didier Deschamps ont dû s’employer jusqu’au bout pour éliminer une sélection paraguayenne très combative. Une opposition rugueuse qui, selon le staff français, n’a pas toujours été suffisamment maîtrisée par l’arbitrage.

Le sélectionneur adjoint a d’ailleurs confirmé que la Fédération française de football avait déposé un recours afin d’obtenir l’annulation du carton jaune reçu par Michael Olise. Au total, trois joueurs français ont été avertis au cours de cette rencontre, contre un seul côté paraguayen.

Pour Guy Stéphan, cette bataille a permis de mesurer la solidité mentale de son groupe.

« Jouer un match de cette intensité à ce stade de la compétition est très enrichissant. Cela nous apporte des réponses sur la capacité des joueurs à faire face à une telle adversité. »

Le technicien français s’est également félicité de la maîtrise dont ont fait preuve ses joueurs malgré les nombreuses tensions sur le terrain.

« C’était un match où il était facile de perdre ses nerfs, mais personne n’a craqué. C’est une vraie preuve de maturité, surtout avec un groupe aussi jeune. »

S’il reconnaît que cette rencontre a laissé des traces sur le plan physique et nerveux, Guy Stéphan assure que l’équipe est désormais totalement tournée vers son prochain défi.

Le Maroc, un adversaire d’un tout autre profil

Jeudi, à Boston, les Bleus retrouveront le Maroc avec une place en demi-finale en jeu. Les Lions de l’Atlas tenteront de rejoindre le dernier carré d’une Coupe du monde pour la deuxième édition consécutive.

Pour Guy Stéphan, le défi sera très différent de celui proposé par le Paraguay.

« Nous allons affronter une équipe complètement différente. Le Maroc est très bien organisé, solide défensivement et particulièrement dangereux dans les transitions. »

L’adjoint de Didier Deschamps a également souligné la qualité individuelle de plusieurs joueurs marocains, capables de faire la différence sur les côtés.

« C’est une équipe qui possède de nombreux atouts, aussi bien collectivement qu’individuellement. Il n’y a aucun doute sur sa qualité. »

Thuram de retour, Tchouaméni toujours incertain

Sur le plan médical, Guy Stéphan a indiqué que Marcus Thuram devait reprendre l’entraînement collectif après avoir manqué les deux dernières rencontres en raison d’un problème au mollet.

La situation reste en revanche plus incertaine pour Aurélien Tchouaméni, toujours gêné par une blessure aux adducteurs contractée avant le huitième de finale.

« Nous suivons son évolution au quotidien. Le temps est compté puisque le match est jeudi, mais il poursuit son travail spécifique. »

Un soutien appuyé à Kylian Mbappé

Enfin, Guy Stéphan a été interrogé sur les propos racistes tenus à l’encontre de Kylian Mbappé par une sénatrice paraguayenne après le huitième de finale.

Sa réaction a été sans appel :

« C’est indigne, abject et scandaleux. »

Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis has announced a 31-player preliminary squad for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The squad features a blend of experienced internationals and emerging talent as South Africa prepares for another major continental challenge.

The biggest objective for South Africa is to secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. To achieve that, South Africa must reach the semi-finals of the tournament, making every group-stage fixture crucial.

Ellis’ team have been drawn in Group B alongside Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, and Tanzania. Their campaign begins against Tanzania on 27 July, before they face the remaining group opponents in pursuit of a knockout-stage place.

The squad includes several established stars, with captain Thembi Kgatlana, Linda Motlhalo, Bambanani Mbane, Karabo Dhlamini, Andile Dlamini, Hildah Magaia, and Jermaine Seoposenwe notably absent from the preliminary list. Young talents and players performing well both locally and abroad have also earned opportunities to impress before the final squad is confirmed.

ELLIS CHASING ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN

Ellis will hope to guide Banyana Banyana back to the summit of African football after their mixed fortunes in recent editions of the competition.

The national team lifted their maiden WAFCON title in 2022, defeating Morocco in the final to make history. However, they could not retain the trophy in 2024, finishing fourth while Nigeria claimed a record-extending 10th continental crown.

With a 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup place on the line, Ellis will expect her squad to deliver another strong tournament and continue South Africa’s impressive rise in women’s football.
