Elder Scrolls 6 is a ways off, but who needs it? The world's most specific game jam is back with 40 playable entries based off Oblivion's wonderful/awful persuade-o-wheel
Remember Oblivion's wheel system for grinding NPC disposition? You probably do, since a very popular remastered version of that game came out a single year ago. But if not then, well, you Skyrim kids don't know what you're missing. Where the most recent Elder Scrolls (the one that's 15 years old), only let you affect your relationship with NPCs by completing quests and joining factions, Oblivion would let you affect everyone's opinion of you granularly, via a wheel-based minigame you could drop into mid-conversation.
Was it good? No. Was it intuitive? No. But was it representative of the actual experience of building up a rapport with other human beings? Again, no. No wonder then that it has become an object of cathexis for a certain generation of videogame players who found themselves developmentally T-boned by Oblivion's jelly-clockwork world at precisely the right age. Wheeljam 2 is the second iteration of a game jam that tasks participants with the speedy creation of playable things that feature "either the lockpicking minigame or persuasion wheel in some capacity." That's right, folks, the lockpicking minigame is in there too now.
Last year's entry ended up with 32 entries and some actually cool ideas, but 2026's edition has just wrapped up with a total of 40 submissions.
Voting is currently ongoing to pick the winner (who will get, uh, nothing tangible—"DO IT FOR THE LOVE OF THE WHEEL," beseech the jam's organisers), but the submissions are all playable now. Heck, you can fire up 27 of them in your browser, just as the flash games of olde.
I've mucked about with some of the submissions and, yep, many of these are utterly inscrutable, which is only proper. My personal favourite so far is probably A Contrario, which puts you in the clogs of a vapourwave artists' mannequin whose combat system is a wheel-ised selection of seasons, but I'm not willing to call it my winner just yet. I still need to check out Wheelfox 64 and The Wolf Of Wheel Street.
The jam's voting period ends in about five days, but the games will still be playable afterwards. See you next year for Wheeljam 3: Gettin' The Grease*.

Ai Ogura wordt de eerste Japanse coureur die sinds Nakasuga in 2012 op een MotoGP-podium staat
Ai Ogura werd zondag derde in de Franse GP, achter kampioenschapsleiders Jorge Martín en Marco Bezzecchi, en behaalde het eerste podium voor een Japanse MotoGP-rijder sinds Katsuyuki Nakasuga in de GP van Valencia in 2012. Ogura is ook de eerste coureur van de Asia Talent Cup die een podiumplaats behaalde in de hoogste categorie van motorraces.
Ai Ogura van Trackhouse MotoGP Team, 25 jaar oud, won het Moto2-kampioenschap van 2024 en is bezig aan zijn tweede MotoGP-seizoen, momenteel vijfde in het klassement. Ogura is ook de enige niet-Spanjaard of Italiaan in de top 11 van het MotoGP-klassement op dit moment, waar alleen vier andere niet-West-Europese rijders meedoen: de Zuid-Afrikaan Brad Binder (13e), de Braziliaan Diogo Moreira (17e), de Turk Toprak Razgatlıoğlu (20e) en de Australiër Jack Miller (21e).
Ondanks de aanwezigheid van veel Japanse motorfietsfabrieken, hebben velen gekozen voor Europese rijders. Trackhouse, een Amerikaans team met een Italiaanse motor, uit Aprilia, zette echter een weddenschap af op Ogura en dat wierp zijn vruchten af.
"De waarheid is dat ik 100 procent geef en probeer me aan elke racesituatie aan te passen. Het is altijd onze sterke kant geweest, maar onze zwakte blijft: het begin en de beginfase. We moeten dat aspect verbeteren, en misschien zijn we dan in een positie om sterker te zijn", zei Ogura (via Motorsport).
