Placement: The battery pack should be placed as close as possible to the ground, to lower the center of gravity of the vehicle and thus not affect its dynamic riding performances. The battery placement is also crucial to determine the vehicle packaging and the vehicle’s occupant ergonomics.
From a vehicle dynamics point of view, the battery pack should be positioned in such way that the centre of gravity of the vehicle remains low and mechanical stresses and fatigue on mounting frame are minimised.
Firstly, cross-members can be used to divide the battery pack into multiple compartments. The packaging design presented by US Patent No. 8663824 also demonstrated how a central battery pack member can be employed to further separate the right and the left compartments in addition to providing a channel for connecting power and data lines.
It enables the battery modules to be arranged inside the primary safe zone of the vehicle, i.e. the area beneath the rear passenger seats and extending along the tunnel between the two rows of seats.
The structure is completed by the top enclosure, which seals the battery pack. Sometimes the vehicle structures tend to exploit the volume under the rear seats with a battery pack protrusion that is typically dedicated to host the electronic circuits for the Battery Management System (BMS).
In view of making effective use of the cabin space and to improve safety in a collision, the battery pack is placed under the seats on the inner cabin side of the floor panel. However, in conventional vehicles, the seats are usually mounted via a mounting fixture on a seat rail for adjusting the available leg space in the vehicle body.
