When the Auxiliary Battery Management System (ABMS) detects the SoC of the auxiliary battery is low, it passes that information to Powertrain (PCM) via the Body Control Module (BCM). The PCM then commands the APU to start converting energy from the high voltage (HV) battery into the auxiliary battery.
The auxiliary battery can be found under the HVAC (heating and air conditioning) vent at the passenger side of the engine bay near the firewall. To remove the vent, disconnect the clips at the top of the vent. Then remove the nut next to the windshield washer fluid cap. Now is also a good time to check for a parasitic drain when the vehicle is off.
An auxiliary battery, in the context of the W211 Dual Battery System, is a battery that supplies electrical energy for a limited time if the main battery's voltage is low. Systems battery, Auxiliary battery, Alternator, Auxiliary battery relay K67, AIRmatic relay.
The auxiliary battery relay is responsible for determining when the aux battery needs to be charged. It monitors the voltage and, when necessary, signals the charging process to ensure the battery remains in good condition. If this relay malfunctions, it can disrupt the charging cycle, potentially leading to an auxiliary battery malfunction.
The auxiliary battery relay is controlled by the battery control module. It is powered on when the auxiliary battery voltage level becomes low. It's located in the engine bay against the firewall. When facing the engine from the front, you will see the relay to the right of the HVAC vent.
The battery control module is located in the trunk next to the battery and spare tire. It monitors the voltage level of both batteries and the alternator and sets DTCs (diagnostic trouble codes) in the event of a failure. It also controls the auxiliary battery relay. The battery control module communicates on a CAN (controller area network).
