Battery-powered rescue tools, such as spreading, cutting, and spreading/cutting combination tools, are used by emergency responders to create greater access to persons trapped within vehicles by spreading or removing areas of damaged vehicle from around them.
Its main job is to provide electrical power to start the vehicle and operate all the electrical accessories when the engine is not running. It also provides spike protection when loads are turned on and off and serves to stabilize charging system voltage when the engine is in operation.
Inclement weather, inaccessible locations, and harsh terrain can hinder emergency personnel responding to incidents that require extrication. The use of battery-powered tools for vehicle extrication increases the mobility and speed with which responders can arrive and setup on scene.
"Battery management" is a fairly new phrase coined for a subject that should be near and dear to anyone involved in the operation, maintenance, and repair of emergency response vehicles (ERVs). By Christian P. Koop
Even in the late 1800s and early 1900s, most automobiles did not use batteries because they did not need them. Early gasoline engines used either a hot-tube ignition or the magneto to fire the spark plugs. One of the first electrical devices that required a battery was the horn, which was originally called the Klaxon from the Greek word klaxo.
A battery-operated extrication tool is a self-contained hydraulic system that electrically powers an internal high-pressure pump and pistons. These components control the flow and direction of the hydraulic fluid through input and output valves and chambers.

The Latest and Greatest Extrication Tools—Battery or Traditional
I was not always a fan of battery-powered rescue tools for two reasons. First, we all know that the weakest link in any of our other battery-operated tools on the rig has quite simply been the battery. The batteries always get the bad rap because they depend on us (firefighters) to make sure that they are charged and in good condition. We ...
