Grounding directly to the negative post is a fire hazard at worse, and an unnecessary risk to your equipment at best. Battery post connections also increase likelihood of ground loops and ground conducted noise. On a personal note, I'm not sure why USA and Japanese manufacturers instruct people to connect things to the negative terminal.
Use one ground only, close to the battery. The battery poles are supposed to be safe to touch. The battery ground should therefore be the most reliable and visible ground connection. The DC ground cabling should have a sufficient thickness to be able to carry a fault current at least equal to the DC fuse rating.
When an electrical device is directly connected to the negative post, if the negative post to block or chassis connection opens up or develops excessive resistance, the battery negative post will divert alternator or starter current through whatever is attached to the negative post. This can be hundreds of amperes!
Once the chassis has been grounded the DC is therefore considered safe to touch if the nominal voltage is 28V or lower. Between the DC circuitry and chassis: basic isolation. Therefore, DC negative or positive grounding is allowed. In the case of positive grounding, non-isolated interface connections will refer to the DC negative and not to ground.
The negative terminal is connected directly with body parts like chassis and engine block where metal part are already grounded. You will lose out on free electrons during the charging process since it would be shorting itself through grounding car battery rather than successfully transferring electrons to the battery.
Grounding the PV will therefore result in ground currents. The PV frames however may be grounded, either close to the PV array or (preferably) to the central ground. This will provide some protection against lightning. Ground close to the battery. The battery poles are supposed to be safe to touch.
