From advanced filtration systems to chemical scrubbers and biofiltration methods, the solutions for managing industrial odors are diverse and tailored to address the unique challenges posed by different types of pollutants.
In a conventional odor treatment system (Fig. 10 A), low intensity of the direct transfer of the hydrophobic pollutant from the gas to aqueous phase is followed by slow pollutant removal. In a TPPB (Fig. 10 B) both pollutant and oxygen are additionally transferred from the gas via NAP to the aqueous phase.
Industrial odor control is a critical aspect of environmental management, ensuring that the air quality within industrial zones and their surrounding areas remains safe and pleasant for both workers and the community.
Though not new in their operating principles and equipment design concepts, some technologies have entered odor treatment applications in recent decades and therefore, are less known than the technologies discussed in Sections 3 Biofilter technology, 4 Biotrickling filter technology, 5 Bioscrubber technology.
Odor treatment technologies based on biotechnology applications are reviewed. Biofiltration, biotrickling filtration and bioscrubbing are the main technologies. Three less known technologies based on specific bioreactor designs are also outlined. Further research is needed for continuing the refinement of odor treatment methods.
