Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are famous for their low cost and ability to hold large amounts of energy in a small package compared to ceramic or film capacitors. While electrolytic capacitors are very popular, they are more sensitive to unwanted voltages and temperature than other capacitors and have relatively high current leakage.
Ceramic capacitors are well-suited for high frequencies and high current pulse loads. Because the thickness of the ceramic dielectric layer can be easily controlled and produced by the desired application voltage, ceramic capacitors are available with rated voltages up to the 30 kV range.
The plastic films used as the dielectric for film capacitors are polypropylene (PP), polyester (PET), polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), polyethylene naphthalate (PEN), and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). Polypropylene has a market share of about 50% and polyester with about 40% are the most used film materials.
