As of December 2017, project developers report to EIA that 239 MW of large-scale battery storage is expected to become operational in the United States between 2018 and 2021.
We recently published an early release of data from our EIA-860, Annual Electric Generator Report, which includes new detailed information on battery storage applications, including information on use cases, generator configuration, and other details on the energy capacity of planned batteries.
In 2021, battery storage capacity is expected to grow by 300%, adding 4.5 GW to the grid. The expansion of battery storage is driven by the declining costs of battery storage, favourable economics when combined with renewable energy and value-added additions in regional transmission organization (RTO) markets.
Given the trend in California of using battery storage for applications such as reliability, large-scale battery storage installations in California tend to be energy-oriented with small power capacities and long durations.
Utilities can also make use of batteries to improve grid reliability with services that support the transmission of electricity, known as ancillary services. One type of ancillary service is frequency regulation, which is the most common use case reported at least once for battery capacity.
