When you are looking to interconnect your lithium-ion batteries with your lead acid batteries, the only method we recommend is with a battery isolator or DC to DC charger in line between the two. The most common application of this set up is for alternator charging.
Remove the connections between the batteries and take each lead-acid battery out one at a time. Put them in a dry place till you can safely get rid of them. Place the lead-acid batteries in the vehicle’s metal casing. Connect the positive of the connectors wires to the positive terminals of the battery and do the same with the negatives.
Instead of replacing them with a new set of lead-acid batteries, it is time to consider replacing lead acid with lithium ion, the newer renewable energy storage option. And when you do, here is how you do that. Can I Replace Lead Acid Battery with Lithium Ion? Replacing lead acid batteries with lithium ion is possible.
In my opinion it is not feasible for the simple reason that charging will be complicated and difficult. You will probably need to disconnect the batteries and charge the lead with a lead acid charger while charging the lithium with a lithium charger.
Both lithium batteries and lead-acid batteries are rechargeable energy storage batteries, but they have very different characteristics. Without proper components in line to separate the two, the batteries cannot be used in conjunction. Please note that these components must meet the technical requirements, including protective measures.
As lithium ion technology is becoming more readily available our team has noticed an outpour of questions. These are in regards to interconnecting lead acid and lithium ion battery banks. As pioneers in this field, Battle Born Batteries is the go-to resource for lithium tech and battery safety.
Lithium-ion vs. Lead Acid: Performance, Costs, and Durability
Lead-acid batteries rely primarily on lead and sulfuric acid to function and are one of the oldest batteries in existence. At its heart, the battery contains two types of plates: a lead dioxide (PbO2) plate, which serves as the positive plate, and a pure lead (Pb) plate, which acts as the negative plate. With the plates being submerged in an electrolyte solution made from a diluted form of ...
