Modern battery housings must be lightweight and yet protect the cells sufficiently (high gravimetric energy density). Excessive weights reduce the range. Mechanical and thermal protection requires an appropriate use of materials. This often results in an oversized battery housing to safely meet the various requirements.
High-voltage battery housings must meet a variety of highly demanding technical requirements. For example, they must be stiff and strong and yet be able to absorb a significant amount of energy in the event of a crash. This is tested via mechanical shock- and crush tests.
That is why the battery housing is an important part of the body assembly of a BEV. In doing so, the battery housing contributes to the rigidity of the body and has a big influence on crash safety and comfort of the vehicle.
