This paper presents a systematic review of the most commonly used battery modeling and state estimation approaches for BMSs. The models include the physics-based electrochemical models, the integral and fractional order equivalent circuit models, and data-driven models.
To define the electrochemistry-based model, the relevant voltages and how they impact the voltage of the battery must be detailed. First, the battery voltage that the model is capturing and our system is measuring is seen in Figure A.1 to be the difference in potential between the surfaces of the negative and positive electrodes.

The basic theory and application methods of battery system modeling and state estimation are reviewed systematically. The most commonly used battery models including the physics-based electrochemical models, the integral and fractional-order equivalent circuit models, and the data-driven models are compared and discussed.
For parameter identification, an approach that compares the battery model simulation to the actual battery response using an objective function is used [ 12 ]. Multi-swarm particle swarm optimisation [ 36] and genetic algorithm (GA) [ 7] are used with an objective function to match several battery models to the same experimental data.
The increased penetration rate of the battery system requires accurate modelling of charging profiles to optimise performance.
