The performance of compressed air energy storage systems is centred round the efficiency of the compressors and expanders. It is also important to determine the losses in the system as energy transfer occurs on these components. There are several compression and expansion stages: from the charging, to the discharging phases of the storage system.
Compressed air energy storage may be stored in undersea caves in Northern Ireland. In order to achieve a near- thermodynamically-reversible process so that most of the energy is saved in the system and can be retrieved, and losses are kept negligible, a near-reversible isothermal process or an isentropic process is desired.
(1) explains how electrical energy can be stored as exergy of compressed air in an idealized reversed process. The Adiabatic method achieves a much higher efficiency level of up to 70%. In the adiabatic storage method, the heat, which is produced by compression, is kept and returned into the air, as it is expanded to generate power.
Compressed air energy storage has a significant impact on the energy sector by providing large-scale, long-duration energy storage solutions. CAES systems can store excess energy during periods of low demand and release it during peak demand, helping to balance supply and demand on the grid.
In this paper, a novel CAES system (compressed air energy storage) is proposed as a suitable technology for the energy storage in a small scale stand-alone renewable energy power plant (photovoltaic power plant) that is designed to satisfy the energy demand of a radio base station for mobile telecommunications.
Compressed air energy storage (CAES) is an effective solution for balancing this mismatch and therefore is suitable for use in future electrical systems to achieve a high penetration of renewable energy generation.

The special thing about compressed air storage is that the air heats up strongly when being compressed from atmospheric pressure to a storage pressure of approx. 1,015 psia (70 bar). Standard multistage air compressors use inter- and after-coolers to reduce discharge temperatures to 300/350°F (149/177°C) and cavern injection air temperature reduced to …

Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) – An Overview
What is Compressed Air Energy Storage? Compressed Air Energy Storage, or CAES, is essentially a form of energy storage technology. Ambient air is compressed and stored under pressure in underground caverns using surplus or off-peak power. During times of peak power usage, air is heated (and therefore expands), which drives a turbine to generate ...
