Current sensors are needed throughout grid-tied systems for control of the converters and inverters, optimization of power extraction from solar panels, and fault detection for safety. PV systems For a grid-tied photovoltaic system, the conversion of energy from solar panels is usually done in two stages.
Sensor plays an important role in many applications to ensure the successful operation of the system. The main objective of this paper is to summarize the application of sensors and its characteristic features in various stages of solar power generation system and also the implementation of voltage and current sensors in real time.
The current sensor used to sense the PV panel output current is the INA169 module (Figure (a)), it can measure a continuous current up to 5 A. Figure (b) shows the INA169 current sensor circuit (from INA169 Datasheet). The INA169 is a high-side current monitor that measures the voltage drop across a sense resistor (Rs).
Arduino IDE, LabVIEW, and LIFA are used as the software of the system design. The Figure below shows the schematic diagram of the instrumentation system. The current and voltage sensors sense the output current and voltage from the PV panel. Then, the readings of the two sensors are transmitted to the microcontroller of the Arduino UNO board.
This project proposes a Low-cost way of virtual instrumentation for real-time monitoring of the PV panel characteristics such as voltage, current and power. The system design is based on a low-cost Arduino acquisition board.
