EV batteries can be filled with cells in different kinds and shapes. This article will explore the lithium-ion battery cells used inside electric vehicles. There are mainly three types of lithium-ion battery cells used inside EV battery pack; cylindrical cell, prismatic cell, and pouch cell.
Lithium-ion cells are the building blocks of battery packs, and they are available in various form factors and sizes. The three primary components of a lithium-ion cell are the cathode and anode, separated by an electrolyte. These parts are stacked together and placed in one of a few packages: cylindrical, pouch, or hard case prismatic.
Cylindricals: Cylindrical cells have their electrodes rolled up like a jelly roll and placed inside a cylindrical case. These cells are relatively small, and dimensionally stable during operation. 18650 Cells: 18650 cells are among the most widely used lithium-ion cell sizes. They measure 18mm in diameter and 65mm in length, hence the name.
Also known as “white”, “black” and “grey” boxes, respec-tively, the nature and characteristics of these model types are compared. Since the Li-ion battery cell is a thermo-electro-chemical system, the models are either in the thermal or in the electrochemical state-space.
In a prismatic cell, battery materials fold multiple times and are put inside a rectangular-shaped casing. Lastly, pouch-design battery cells are the most flexible ones. Pouch cells consist of cut-out battery material sheets layered on top of the desired number of identical sheets.
The transfer of lithium ions between the electrodes occurs at a much higher voltage than in other battery types and, as they must be balanced by an equal amount of electrons, a single lithium-ion cell can produce a voltage of 3.6 volts or higher, depending on the cathode materials. A typical alkaline cell produces only around 1.5 volts.
