This study investigates the types of polymeric adhesives which are used in various battery components and shows how careful choice of components can speed up disassembly and circumvent the need for shredding and increase the purity and value of the recycled material. 1. Introduction
Courtesy of Dupont. Some adhesives for battery assembly serve a multifunctional role, providing structural joining, thermal management, and support for dielectric isolation. Adhesives in this class offer thermal management and medium strength that supports the stiffness and mechanical performance of the battery pack.
They suggested two design modifications to ease disassembly: (i) constructing battery packs without modules, using only larger cells, and (ii) employing reversible adhesives to bind the cells. Gerlitz et al. also noted the difficulty posed by non-detachable joints, such as welding or adhesives, in battery disassembly.
Advanced adhesives and sealants like those from DuPont can help advance sustainability. An essential contribution of adhesives to EV battery design is that they allow for greater simplicity. For example, adhesives help reduce or eliminate mechanical fasteners, reducing battery complexity.
Battery cells are clustered together and mated with thermal interface materials to create modules. Thermal interface materials are used to transfer heat from the modules to the cooling plate. Structural adhesives are used between cells and between cells and the module housing to increase pack structural performance and durability.
However, the current lack of standardisation in design remains a significant barrier to automating battery disassembly . Additionally, the uncertain conditions of end-of-life or damaged EVBs add to the complexity of executing the disassembly process effectively.
