See image below… On most battery operated devices that use round cylindrical type batteries such as double AA, triple AAA, C, and D batteries, the negative end (flat end) of the battery goes on the spring and the positive end (side with a nub) goes to the positive end.
The electricity needs to go through all the batteries one after the other in the same direction. So it goes down one and then back up the other. Each battery produces a voltage between the + and the - . When they are connected end to end the voltages add up.
You can have batteries mount with all the same direction and still be in series. You just have to make the inter-joining 'strap' run the length of the battery so that they are still connected + to - in the circuit. This would cost more in manufacturing and add unnecessary resistance to the circuit for something that is purely aesthetics.

Each element has its own job to do, and all the different parts of a battery working together create the reliable and long-lasting power you rely on every day.
Batteries are always used in series with rare exception. Parallel connected batteries are problematic. It does increase max current, but under low current demand the higher output battery tries to charge the other battery. The switch disconnects the batteries from the circuit but the batteries still have a current path between each other.
