The NREL team, led by Dr. Chad Hunter, compared the monetary costs and revenues of fourteen different energy storage technologies that can operate for 12 hours or more. They published their results in the journal Joule.
Long-term storage can include seasonal energy storage, which can shift delivery of power to a different time of year. Diurnal storage can shift power delivery over a few days. And, long-duration storage is particularly important for the power grid’s transformation to clean energy and what I’m focusing on here.
How long the battery energy storage systems (BESS) can deliver, however, often depends on how it’s being used. A new released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration indicates that approximately 60 percent of installed and operational BESS capacity is being exerted on grid services.
This results in a deliberate reduction of electricity output. Energy storage can alleviate curtailment by facilitating the efficient use of clean energy resources so that extra production can be stored and used when it’s most needed.
For long-duration storage, “it looks plausible that that would be the technology of choice,” says energy expert Wolf-Peter Schill of the German Institute for Economic Research who coauthored a 2021 review on the economics of energy storage in the Annual Review of Resource Economics.
Ensuring that storage technologies are as long-lived as possible can help to save costs and resources. So can being smarter about when we draw electricity from the grid, says Seth Mullendore, president of the Vermont-based nonprofit Clean Energy Group.
Long-Duration and Long-Term Energy Storage for Renewable Integration
Long-duration energy storage provides 10-100 hours of charging and discharging duration that is beyond the economics or capacity of conventional batteries. Long-term energy storage means shifting the storage time between charging and discharging by weeks or seasons.

Our modelling of South Australia shows that 4-10 hour storage supplied by batteries and/or pumped hydro was often full during excess wind and solar periods, and equally was often empty during periods of excess demand. This led to a need for gas or its equivalent to ensure there was no unserved energy demand.
