It can be seen that at low voltages, and in particular at V oc, the cell is governed by the latter, since n 0, a exp ( - γ L) → n 0, c, while in open circuit the cell behavior is dominated by v s, for sufficiently high mobilities.
Analytic models can help to determine the operation regime of a solar cell. For a detailed understanding of solar cell operation and optimization it is necessary to know how the main performance parameters (open circuit voltage, short circuit current and fill factor) depend on material and structural parameters.
1. Introduction The most important parameters characterizing a solar cell are the open circuit voltage V oc, the short circuit current I sc and the fill factor FF. Since the cell efficiency is proportional to the product of these three numbers, optimization of a solar cell can be achieved by increasing any of these.
Under the above assumptions, and using suitable approximations, we derive analytic formulas in particular for the open circuit voltage V oc in dependency on the generation rate, and from this for the slope (2) S = q k B T ∂ V oc / ∂ ( ln G).
Short circuit current Under the assumption of constant quasi Fermi levels, as used before, and for the bulk recombination limited case, the short circuit current density is trivial.
