Sandia National Laboratories and CSolPower are researching the use of landscaping gravel as a thermal energy storage medium. New Mexico-based CSolPower LLC is partnering with Sandia National Laboratories to research and develop the use of landscape gravel as a thermal energy storage medium for intermittent sources of generation like solar and wind.
Gravel-water thermal storage is a less-expensive version of tank storage, which is generally buried in the ground. These kinds of storage are mostly insulated on the side and the top. The storage media are normally a gravel and water mixture, which could also be sand or soil mixture with water [65,66].
As detailed by Tech Briefs, engineers at Sandia National Laboratories partnered with CSolPower LLC to develop a prototype that stores thermal heat with gravel. After being heated to 932 degrees Fahrenheit, the gravel was able to maintain high temperatures for 20 hours.
In a broad sense, gravity energy storage (GES) refers to mechanical technologies that utilize the height drop of energy storage media, such as water or solid, to realize the charging and discharging process of energy storage. Pumped energy storage is also a form of GES.
"Because this is a smaller prototype, you end up with an unfavorable ratio of the volume of gravel to its overall surface area. That results in a larger percentage of heat loss relative to the amount of energy you can store.
As high-density concrete is not able to prevent steam diffusion, a layer of the steam barrier is installed between insulation and concrete layer. Gravel-water thermal storage is a less-expensive version of tank storage, which is generally buried in the ground. These kinds of storage are mostly insulated on the side and the top.
