Chinese battery maker Gotion showcases its battery cells at the 2023 China International Energy Storage and Lithium Battery Technology Exhibition in Shanghai in July. In response to growing demand and stricter policy restrictions, Chinese battery makers are ramping up efforts to construct overseas factories.
It will be the largest battery factory in Europe when production begins in 2025. According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, in the first half of this year, China's lithium battery product exports increased by 69 percent year-on-year, with a predominant focus on power batteries.
This considerable gap between demand for cell components and local supply signals growth opportunities in the battery component market. The global revenue pool of the core cell components is expected to continue growing by around 17 percent a year through 2030 (Exhibit 2).
The speed of battery electric vehicle (BEV) uptake—while still not categorically breakneck—is enough to render it one of the fastest-growing segments in the automotive industry. 1 Our projections show more than 200 new battery cell factories will be built by 2030 to keep up with rising demand.
General Motors is planning to establish four new battery factories in the United States, with a total capacity of 140 GWh per year. Additionally, Stellantis, the multinational automotive conglomerate, is in the process of building a new factory in Indiana, with an initial annual production capacity of 23 GWh.
By establishing local gigafactories, automakers, and battery manufacturers can reduce supply chain dependencies, ensure a stable and timely supply of batteries, and potentially benefit from government incentives and regulations that promote domestic battery production.
