(Recommended) Charge Current – The ideal current at which the battery is initially charged (to roughly 70 percent SOC) under constant charging scheme before transitioning into constant voltage charging. (Maximum) Internal Resistance – The resistance within the battery, generally different for charging and discharging.
The internal resistance of the direct current (DC) battery plays a crucial role in the charging process by causing voltage drops, power losses, and affecting the charging speed and efficiency. As shown in Fig. 6 (d), the internal resistance of a battery varies constantly during the charging process.
Charging is the process of replenishing the battery energy in a controlled manner. To charge a battery, a DC power source with a voltage higher than the battery, along with a current regulation mechanism, is required. To ensure the efficient and safe charging of batteries, it is crucial to understand the various charging modes.
Charging batteries is simple (in theory) – put a voltage across the terminals and the battery charges. If safe charging, fast charging and/or maximum battery life are important, that’s when things get complicated.
At this stage, the battery voltage remains relatively constant, while the charging current continues to decrease. Charging Termination: The charging process is considered complete when the charging current drops to a specific predetermined value, often around 5% of the initial charging current.
Importantly, the DC power source ensures that it does not exceed the maximum battery voltage limit during this adjustment. The relationship between the charging voltage and the battery charging current limit can be expressed by the formula: Charging voltage = OCV + (R I x Battery charging current limit) Here, R I is considered as 0.2 Ohm.

Since no current flows through the internal resistance, the voltage does not drop across the internal resistance, and the voltage across the terminals of the real battery (e.g. Figure (PageIndex{9})) must thus be equal to the voltage across the terminals of the ideal battery, so that (Delta V_{ideal}=6text{V}).

This represents a large current from a relatively small battery of about 800 milliampere (mAh) hours. A current pulse of 2.4 amperes from an 800 mAh battery, for example, correspond to a C-rate of 3C. This is three times the current rating of the battery. Such high current pulses can only be delivered if the internal battery resistance is low.

Charge and discharge rates are often given as C or C-rate, which is a measure of the rate at which a battery is charged or discharged relative to its capacity. The C-rate is defined as the charge or discharge current divided by the battery''s capacity to store an electrical charge. While rarely stated explicitly, the unit of the C-rate is h, equivalent to stating the battery''s capacity to store an electrical charge in unit hour times current in the same unit as the charge or discharge …
