With an increasing number of lithium-ion battery (LIB) energy storage station being built globally, safety accidents occur frequently. Diagnosing faults accurately and quickly can effectively avoid safe accidents. However, few studies have provided a detailed summary of lithium-ion battery energy storage station fault diagnosis methods.
Preprints and early-stage research may not have been peer reviewed yet. Lithium-ion batteries have become the mainstream energy storage solution for many applications, such as electric vehicles and smart grids. However, various faults in a lithium-ion battery system (LIBS) can potentially cause performance degradation and severe safety issues.
Old age: Lithium-ion batteries typically have a lifespan of 2-3 years or around 300 to 500 charge cycles. If your battery is older, its ability to hold a charge may be significantly reduced. Troubleshooting lithium-ion battery issues requires a methodical approach to identify and resolve the common problems associated with charging.
According to the Chinese national standard ‘Lithium-ion battery for electrical energy storage’ (GB/T 36276), the external short circuit fault experiment is to connect the positive and negative terminals of the cell with a line, and the line resistance is required to be less than 5 mΩ.
In addition to lithium-induced battery failure, the cycle life is another problem. For instance, the use of lithium as an anode causes dendrite growth and pulverization during cycling, thereby significantly reducing the life of the cell. The large volume change in a cell with a lithium anode is also an unsolved problem.
When your lithium-ion battery fails to show any signs of charging—no LEDs light up, and no power seems to be reaching the device—it can be quite baffling. This scenario often points to a battery that might be in a deep discharge state where the voltage has fallen below a safe level, making it unresponsive to standard charging methods.
