Let’s say you’ve owned a solar energy system for several years, and over time, your energy needs have expanded. Whether you need more power to charge a new electric vehicle or because of increased home consumption (maybe you invested in a new heat pump), there are many reasons why people may want to retrofit an existing solar energy system.
The measured and simulated energy consumption of the house after retrofit are compared. The energy consumption of space heating and cooling is simulated as 9556 kWh and the actual energy consumption is 9100.85 kWh.
Compared with the energy consumption before retrofit as depicted in Fig. 4, the highest monthly energy consumption reduces from 4500 kWh to less than 2500 kWh. The lowest value reduces to less than 500 kWh. So, the retrofit solution results in significant energy savings. Fig. 13.
For this reason, many operators reach their limits without retrofitting a photovoltaic storage unit. During the day, when most electricity is produced, most people are working. Time switches or Smart Home systems can only use a part of the generated electricity immediately.
This paper fills this pressing research gap by developing a framework for retrofitting existing houses to nearly zero energy buildings. The developed framework is then implemented on a real house in Beijing to demonstrate its reliability and practicability.
