To demonstrate how to transition the production of aluminum in the Sunbelt region we use an Emirates Global Aluminum smelter in the UAE as a case study. EGA produced a total of 2,630,000t in 2018 its two plants, at Jebel Ali and Al Taweelah with a total installed capacity of 5450 MW.
Introduction Aluminum is a critical material for the energy transition. It is the second most-produced metal by mass after iron and demand for it has been growing globally at an average rate of 5.3% over the past decade .
Recent innovations in aluminium technology have further expanded its applications in the solar industry. Thin-film solar panels, which utilize minimal amounts of aluminium, offer flexibility and lightweight characteristics, making them suitable for various installations, including curved surfaces and portable devices.
The smelter will be 100% powered by renewable hydroelectric energy, placing it in the second quartile of the global aluminum site cost curve. First production is expected in June 2022, with full capacity of 447,000 tpy from the smelter’s three potlines to be achieved in March 2023.
The ability to modulate aluminum production is specifically modeled in order to maximize the utilization of RE and minimize the need for storing electricity. Global primary aluminum production was around 64.33 million tons in 2018 , with a corresponding primary aluminum smelting power consumption of about 867,757 GWh .
