The so-called double-layer develops as a result of electrochemical charge-transfer and diffusion processes at the phase boundary between an electron conductor (electrode) and a liquid ion conductor (electrolyte) . Double layer capacitors are available with capacities of 10 F up to 5000 F, and specific energies around 4.5 Wh/kg (see Table 1).
The function of an Electric Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC) is to store and release electrical energy efficiently and rapidly. EDLCs consist of two porous electrodes separated by an electrolyte solution. When a voltage is applied across the electrodes, charge accumulates at the electrode-electrolyte interface, forming an electrical double layer.
Following are drawbacks or disadvantages of EDL capacitor (EDLC). 1. EDLCs often have lower voltage ratings compared to other capacitors and batteries. This limitation can restrict their use in applications requiring higher voltage levels. 2.
Double-layer capacitance is electrostatic in origin, while pseudocapacitance is electrochemical, thus, supercapacitors act as a hybrid of conventional capacitors and batteries. A supercapacitor has a capacitance of more than 15 million times more than the self-capacitance of the earth which is approximately 710 F.
Double layer capacitors are available with capacities of 10 F up to 5000 F, and specific energies around 4.5 Wh/kg (see Table 1). Specific outputs of 800–1200 W kg −1 are sufficient for most technical applications .
It has been reported that the capacitance of electric double layer capacitors is proportional to the ion concentration and 1/thickness of the double-layer and that the ion concentration is affected by the voltage between two electrodes and the polarization of the carbon electrodes.

Introduction to Supercapacitors
Supercapacitors are also known as ultracapacitors or double-layer capacitors. They bridge the gap between capacitors and batteries. Supercapacitors display higher energy density than a conventional capacitor and higher power density than batteries. They have high cyclic stability, high power density, fast charging, and good rate capability. Supercapacitors …
