A thyristor is a type of semiconductor device that acts as a switch for controlling electrical power. It is a four-layered device with three terminals: anode, cathode, and gate. The anode is the positive terminal, while the cathode is the negative terminal.
1. Limit on firing angle, expressed as a constant reactance limit (Xmin0). 2. Limit on harmonic currents circulating between the thyristor branch and the capacitor, approximated as a constant voltage across the TCSC. (See 9.2.2.1 for calculation of the harmonic currents.) 3. Limit on thyristor current.
The power frequency and harmonic currents in the thyristor reactors can be calculated while the impedance of the reactor at the power frequency and the X/R ratio at the power and harmonic frequencies should be measured during the factory routine tests.
The outcomes of the various tests conducted using a multimeter provide valuable insights into the health and functionality of the device. When testing the forward voltage drop, a reading within the typical range of 0.7 to 1.2 volts indicates a healthy thyristor.
Thyristor switched capacitor banks (TSC) can be applied for compensating the fast changing characteristics of electric welding machines, provide a maximum response of one-cycle of system frequency [ 27 - 29 ].
The 10 s rating of the thyristor branch of the TCSC system at 100% current brings the capacitor voltage up to 2 pu of the rated capacitor voltage (IEEE 824 2004). The instantaneous overvoltage stress for the thyristor with its series reactor would be a lightning surge across the TCSC (IEC 60071-1 2015).

This capacitor voltage will be phase-shifted anywhere from 0o to 90o lagging behind the power source AC waveform. When this phase-shifted voltage reaches a high enough level, the SCR will trigger. With enough voltage across the capacitor to periodically trigger the SCR, the resulting load current waveform will look something like Figure below)

Thyristor-switched capacitor
A thyristor-switched capacitor (TSC) ... Sometimes, however, the TSC may turn on at an incorrect instant (as a result of a control or measurement fault), or the capacitor may become charged to a voltage above the normal value so that even at the minimum of valve voltage, a large transient current results. The current in the TSC will then consist of a fundamental-frequency …
