When installing a new battery, the most likely locations are on an external house wall or in a garage. The new standard is more restrictive on location than previous rules and guidelines, making it harder to find a suitable location for a home battery. Batteries aren’t allowed near combustible materials.
The standard requires clear space of at least 600 mm to either side and 900 mm above the battery between the battery and any windows, doors, and appliances such as hot water units and air conditioners.
Batteries not on the CEC approved list are in category 3 and include bespoke assembled battery banks. When installing a new battery, the new standard is more restrictive on location than previous rules and guidelines, making it harder to find a suitable location for a home battery.
A pre-assembled integrated battery energy storage system includes internal safety switches and an inverter, allowing it to deliver standard 230 V AC power to a house switchboard via standard 230 V household wiring. This category has the fewest installation requirements.
The new EU Battery Regulation 2023/1542 entered into force on 17 August 2023 and covers the whole lifecycle of batteries from production to reuse and recycling. While the Battery Regulation is already in force, further legal documents will be published in the coming years specifying certain aspects of the implementation (see timeline below).
