The last decades have shown a constant increase in solar photovoltaic (PV) and solar thermal (ST) deployment, with a global average annual growth rate of 36% and 10.5% respectively [ 4 ]. Solar energy is now the cheapest and most competitive source of new electricity generation in most markets worldwide [ 5 ].

The International Energy Agency defined solar energy as the “new king of electricity” production, which is expected to cover almost one-third of the upcoming energy demand by 2030 [ 6 ].
A systematic review approach was used to identify relevant scientific literature on the topic of solar accessibility in high-latitude urban environments in the selected urban spatial domains of outdoor, envelope, and indoor.
Most of the metrics are energy/solar-related, while geometric, economic, and social metrics find fewer applications. Solar irradiation emerged as the most common metric, the quantification of which is fundamental for the definition of other energy/solar or economic metrics utilized to better convey the results.
Among the journals, Solar Energy is the source most centered on solar aspects, dealing with the research and development of this technology, its applications, measurements, and policy-related aspects.
It was found that a regular grid cluster with a large inter-buildings distance and 45° orientation was the most performative option for solar accessibility, while the medium to large inter-building distances combined with north-south orientation was an acceptable trade-off between wind and sun for all patterns.
