The Baltic Storage Platform battery park being built in Estonia is set to be the biggest battery park in continental Europe. Speaking at the cornerstone laying event for the battery park on October 3rd, Karl Kull, the CEO of Evecon said: "This is a historic moment for both Estonia and for the entire Baltic energy sector for two reasons.
The battery park will be called the Baltic Storage Platform, in which Evecon will have a 20 percent stake and Corsica Sole will have 80 percent stake. Climate Minister Kristen Michal (Reform) said that the emergence of reserve and storage capacities in Estonia is good news and it is particularly welcome that it is being done by private companies.
According to a recent forecast on battery manufacturing, China is expected to maintain its top position in the forthcoming decade, reaching a capacity of four terawatt-hours by 2030, followed by the United States. Together with China and the United States, the European region had one of the largest battery manufacturing capacities as of 2023.
Estonia is hoping this new battery park will help their synchronization with the European... Prime Minister of Estonia Kristen Michal (L) meeting with President of the European Commission Ursula Von der Leyen, October 16, 2024. Estonia is hoping this new battery park will help their synchronization with the European grid.
Among the publicly traded battery energy producers, the U.S.-based Tesla and China-based CATL were the companies with the largest market capitalization as of June 2023. In contrast, the major EV battery manufacturers in the world were all located in East Asia, and CATL dominated the market with an installed capacity of over 240 gigawatt-hours.
Eesti Energia was unable to secure a contract for a large-scale energy storage facility through an international tender. It is expected that it would have a capacity ranging from 25 to 50 megawatt-hours that sufficiently meets the reserve needs of the Baltic countries.
