When one thinks of photovoltaic cells, then it is usually in connection with the conversion of solar radiation into electricity, a main research area at Fraunhofer ISE in line with the energy transformation.
Energy transmission is carried out in the form of light, and the photovoltaic cell is not used as a “solar cell,” but rather to convert the transmitted laser light into electricity.
Research data are not shared. For solar cells operating under the broad-band solar spectrum, the photovoltaic conversion efficiency is fundamentally limited by transmission and thermalization losses. For monochromatic light, these losses can be minimized by matching the photon energy and the absorber material's bandgap energy.
Finally, the metal electrode is deposited onto the patterned active layers, followed by the third scribing to isolate the metal electrode. By selectively patterning the layers of the PV, the cells are isolated and interconnected in series with neighboring cells.
However, researchers at Fraunhofer ISE are also working on another application for photovoltaic (PV) cells: Power-by-Light systems (also known as Power-over-Fiber) in which optical power transfer is used to supply electricity to electronics.
Transparent photovoltaics (TPVs), which combine visible transparency and solar energy conversion, are being developed for applications in which conventional opaque solar cells are unlikely to be feasible, such as windows of buildings or vehicles.
