In this paper, the short-circuit fault of DC bus in energy storage power station is analyzed and simulated. The short circuit of DC bus is composed of three parts: short circuit current provided by energy storage battery, short circuit current provided by power grid and short circuit current provided by DC energy storage capacitor.
The internal short circuit was triggered by the rupture and deformation of structures within the battery, such as electrodes and separators. The higher the battery SOC, the faster the average temperature rise rate, leading to more severe thermal runaway.
Clarifying the contributions of chemical reactions and internal short circuit to thermal runaway is crucial for developing safer lithium-ion battery. In this paper, the relationship between internal short circuit and thermal runaway of lithium-ion battery under thermal abuse condition is investigated through experimental and modeling approaches.
When an internal short circuit occurs, both Cell-A and Cell-B experience significant changes in temperature rise and voltage drop, with temperature changes lagging behind the voltage drop and the lag times are 9 s and 24 s, respectively.
Relationship between internal short circuit and thermal runaway is investigated. Internal short circuit caused by thermal shrinkage of separator happens before thermal runaway. Internal short circuit generates little joule heat due to the sharp increase of resistance.
As shown in Fig. 23 (A) and (B), the short circuit is triggered at 1 s, resulting in a significant voltage drop in both cases, with the voltage of the failed cells dropping the most. Fig. 23 (C) and (D) illustrate the current, showing a significant variation in short-circuit currents among the cells in the series-parallel module.
