In severe cases, it can cause the battery to rupture and explode. Bending a lithium battery or subjecting it to a strong impact can cause internal deformation. This deformation can lead to mechanical failure of the battery’s components and create conditions ripe for thermal runaway, where the battery heats uncontrollably.
When a failure is triggered, these batteries can enter “thermal runaway”—an uncontrollable, self-heating state marked by the release of toxic gases and rapid conflagration that can lead to explosions. The complexity and intensity of lithium-ion battery fires make them a formidable challenge for firefighters to extinguish.
“So when a fire does happen, it’s much more dangerous,” Khoo said. All lithium-ion batteries use flammable materials, and incidents such as the one in the Bronx are likely the result of “thermal runaway,” a chain reaction which can lead to a fire or catastrophic explosion, according to Khoo.
It is important to note that Lithium battery fires cause severe heat, rapid fire spread, and production of toxic gases. A Lithium-ion battery works by allowing lithium ions to flow in between two electrodes which are separated by an electrolyte. This movement produces electricity.
When a lithium battery is crushed or punctured, the physical trauma can lead to short-circuits within the battery. This damage disrupts the battery’s internal architecture, leading to immediate and intense heat generation. In severe cases, it can cause the battery to rupture and explode.
