New research reveals that battery manufacturing will be more energy-efficient in future because technological advances and economies of scale will counteract the projected rise in future energy demand.
Although the invention of new battery materials leads to a significant decrease in the battery cost, the US DOE ultimate target of $80/kWh is still a challenge (U.S. Department Of Energy, 2020). The new manufacturing technologies such as high-efficiency mixing, solvent-free deposition, and fast formation could be the key to achieve this target.
By addressing these challenges and fostering continued collaboration, the battery industry can advance towards a more sustainable future where new battery technology plays a pivotal role in meeting energy demand while minimizing environmental impact.
To address these limitations, a number of next-generation battery technologies including high-nickel, silicon anode-based, lithium–sulfur, lithium–air, and solid-state batteries have been developed. However, the energy requirements and resulting greenhouse gas emissions are yet unknown, which could impact their future commercialization.
Battery scientists are optimistic that the new breed of batteries can overcome two key drawbacks of conventional lithium-ion. First, they say, nickel-rich cathodes will enable the battery industry to use less cobalt in the cathode. Second, solid-state chemistries will enable battery makers to use lithium metal in the anode.
Undeniably, securing sustainability in batteries should not focus only on the end of life (EoL) but throughout the life cycle of the batteries. Additionally, the responsibility of establishing circularity in batteries should not depend solely on industries and producers but should involve consumers as well.
