Supercapacitors, also known as ultracapacitors, are emerging as a promising technology for energy storage in EVs.
Installing a supercapacitor to serve as an additional energy source is one of the practical and realistic choices for enhancing performance and meeting its characteristics of high energy and power density. Chemical batteries and ultra-capacitors / super-capacitors will make up the energy storage system.
While supercapacitors offer several advantages over batteries for energy storage in EVs, there are also some challenges that need to be addressed: Lower Energy Density: Supercapacitors currently have a lower energy density than batteries, which means that they cannot store as much energy in the same amount of space.
Supercapacitor battery system specification. The supercapacitor battery management system monitors the voltage, temperature and current of these cells in real time, and calculates the SOC and SOP of the supercapacitor battery pack.
Especially, when the SOC is low, the output power of the supercapacitor battery is much higher than that of the lithium-ion batteries, and the vehicle dynamic performance is much better, which can reduce the acceleration time by one-third, as shown in Fig. 15.
