Changes in underlying surfaces are likely to affect local climate. 25,26,27 The large-scale deployment of rooftop solar photovoltaics will alter the energy balance and turbulent exchange processes of existing rooftops, thereby affecting the urban climate.
Zheng and Weng tested the potential mitigative effects of green roofs and photovoltaic systems on the increased building energy demand caused by climate change in Los Angeles County, California.
A comprehensive analysis of research on solar PV roofs reveals that integrating PV components with building elements (roofs, sunshades, and louvers) is a common form in practical applications. The design challenge lies in finding a balance between the original functionality of the components and the added photovoltaic performance.
We used the IMAGE model to compare two scenarios-one in which we simulated the availability of rooftop photovoltaic and one in which we did not. We found that the share of photovoltaic in the total electricity production increases by 80% in 2050 in the scenario that includes rooftop photovoltaic.
Finally, a quantitative method for evaluating the comprehensive potential for energy savings is proposed, considering the electricity generation gain of photovoltaic panels and the comprehensive energy-saving efficiency of photovoltaic roofs, which generates a total potential for energy savings rate of 61.06%.
Although there is a negative correlation between surface temperature and vegetation coverage, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) numerical simulation found that large-scale deployment of rooftop photovoltaics will not have a significant impact on the vegetation ecology of the area.
