lead-acid battery is a collection of a number of lead-acid cells connected in series; the most common ones being 6-volt type and 12-volt type. In case of 6-volt type, three cells are connected in series whereas for 12-volt type, six cells are series-connected. Fig. 3.1 shows the cut-section view of a lead-acid battery.

The construction of a lead acid battery cell is as shown in Fig. 1. It consists of the following parts : Anode or positive terminal (or plate).
A supply of 12 V needs a battery of 10 nickel-iron cells in series but only 6 lead-acid cells in series. It has higher internal resistance than the lead-acid cell and cannot provide a large current. For this reason, it is unsuitable for automobile starting service. The efficiencies of a nickel-iron cell are lower than that of a lead-acid cell.
A lead acid battery is considered damaged if there is a possibility of leakage due to a crack or if one or more caps are missing. Transportation companies and air carriers may require that the batteries be drained of all acid prior to transport. Also, it’s possible that a damaged battery is no longer a dangerous good.
Lead acid batteries are built with a number of individual cells containing layers of lead alloy plates immersed in an electrolyte solution, typically made of 35% sulphuric acid (H2SO4) and 65% water (Figure 1).
The construction of a basic lead-acid cell-type battery is as follows: BATTERY ELEMENT. - The battery element is made up of negative plates, positive plates, separators, and straps (fig. 2-3).
