Abstract: This paper explores the method of reactive power compensation using shunt capacitors for two cases. The first case involves a load fairly close to the AC source. The shunt capacitors are injected into the circuit by a logic circuit which uses the reactive power absorbed by the load, which are inductive in nature, as its input.
The Series and Shunt Capacitor compensation techniques are used to modify the natural electrical characteristics of the electric power system. Providing reactive shunt compensation with shunt-connected capacitors and reactors in optimal location is a well-established technique to get a better voltage profile in a power system.
Having said the types of compensation, in this article we are going to discuss mainly about Shunt compensation using Capacitor bank. Since most loads are inductive in nature they consume lagging reactive power, so the compensation required is usually shunt capacitor bank. Shunt capacitors are employed at substation level for the following reasons:
Use of capacitive (shunt compensation) on various part of the power system improves power factor, Reduce power losses, improves voltage regulation and increased utilization of equipment. Reference: Electric power generation, Transmission and distribution by Leonard L.Grigsby. Power system supply or consumes both active and reactive power.
Shunt capacitive arrangement reduces the total active power loss. From this paper we infer that the compensation is more effective for economical operation of the system with increased efficiency.
A shunt capacitor is a device used to improve power factor by providing capacitive reactance to counteract inductive reactance in electrical power systems. Shunt capacitors help improve the power factor, which reduces line losses and improves voltage regulation in power systems.
Series and Shunt Compensation of Transmission Lines:
It may be noted that for the same voltage boost, the reactive power capacity of a shunt capacitor is greater than that of a series capacitor. The shunt capacitor improves the pf of the load while the series capacitor has hardly any impact on the pf Series capacitors are more effective for long lines for improvement of system stability.

Reactive power compensation | PPT
6. Reactive power generated by the ac power source is stored in a capacitor or a reactor during a quarter of a cycle and in the next quarter of the cycle it is sent back to the power source. So to avoid the circulation between the load and source it needs to be compensated. To regulate the power factor of the system and to maintain the voltage stability we need to …
