Electrolyte plays a crucial role in sodium-based batteries as it facilitates the transport of sodium ions between the cathode and anode. The electrochemical performance of the electrolyte directly impacts the battery's cycling stability, charge-discharge capability, operating voltage, temperature range, and safety.
Table 3. Overview of the electrolytes using different additives and their effects on the electrochemical performance of sodium-based batteries. 5. Conclusion and expectations Electrolyte plays a crucial role in sodium-based batteries as it facilitates the transport of sodium ions between the cathode and anode.
Sodium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, NaTFSI, was selected as the salt. The NaTFSI-IL electrolytes, addressed to safer sodium battery systems, were studied and compared in terms of ionic conductivity and thermal stability as a function of the temperature, the nature of the anion and the cation aliphatic side chain length.
The electrolyte serves as the connection between the highly polarized cathode and anode materials and governs the interface chemistry and overall performance of the battery, including the electrochemical window, energy density, rate capability, safety, and lifespan.
At present, organic liquid electrolytes for sodium ion batteries still have problems such as narrow electrochemical windows and poor stability of SEI films. The development of new, low-cost and high-performance sodium ion battery electrolytes is crucial for the commercialization of sodium ion batteries.
In principle, the electrolyte component should be inert in the battery and act only as a medium for the ion transfer, but in practice, the inertness is only kinetically granted by the formation of the passive layer at the electrode/electrolyte interphases (EEI).
