The streetlight was primarily powered by solar energy stored in a battery and only alternates to the grid when the battery levels are very low. The solar panel and controller were to be designed such that they can be mounted onto the streetlight.
Solar street lights consist of four main parts: The solar panel is one of the most important parts of a solar street light, as the solar panel can convert solar energy into electricity that the lamps can use. There are two types of solar panels commonly used in solar street lights: monocrystalline and polycrystalline.
This paper investigates controlling the street lights from one controller that uses Solar PV energy stored in a battery and the grid as a backup source. The source provided can supply power to all three streetlights from one supply instead of multiple power supplies and controllers. Furthermore, it is also possible to dim the street lights.
Due to the erratic nature of power in the Nigeria, an alternative, reliable and efficient source of power must be looked into. The alternative source must also be able to save power. This informed the idea behind this project. The solution herein proposed is solar powered street light with automatic switching.
