In 2025, Volvo Group’s truck plant in Ghent, Belgium will start to produce battery modules. To date, partners supply both cells and modules to the Group. The investment decision to install battery module manufacturing capacity in Ghent is another important step for the Volvo Group to shape its future value chain for battery systems.
Production plants dedicated to the mobility of the future are expanding, and with them the battery factories. This is according to Acea, the European carmakers' association, which provides an up-to-date map of the factories operating in the EU.
ABEE has announced its plans to build a battery pack giga-factory in the Walloon Region of Belgium. The project is in a well advanced phase. The Walloon government has already given its full support. Located in Seneffe-Manage and with an annual capacity of 3 GWh, it is projected to create from 300 up to 500 job opportunities.
It is followed by France (with the strong presence of Renault and brands linked to the former PSA group) and Spain, which exploits the link between the national automotive industry (Seat) and the Volkswagen Group. There are 42 Gigafactories for electric car batteries in Europe. Of these, 38 are located in 17 EU countries.
“We have started the investment process to establish battery module manufacturing in Ghent. The building is expected to be 12,000 m2 and be located at the Volvo Group manufacturing site. The new high-tech module factory will consist of an almost fully automated process with robots.
The battery module manufacturing line in Ghent will be able to use battery cells both from partners and from the planned battery cell plant in Sweden. “We have started the investment process to establish battery module manufacturing in Ghent.
