For the ramp-up phase of solid-state batteries, there is also already a forecast of costs: in a study conducted in 2019, CISION PR Newswire estimates the cost at $400-800 per kWh in 2026 , which is four to eight times higher than current battery systems. But how do things look beyond these scaling effects?
The rapid expansion will almost certainly lead to cell price declines as the batteries move from prototype sample cells to engineering-scale production. Solid-state batteries hold the promise of improved safety, a longer lifespan and faster charging compared with conventional lithium-ion batteries that use flammable liquid electrolytes.
For instance, an average lithium iron phosphate battery LFP costs around $560 compared to nickel manganese cobalt oxide ones NMCs costing 20% more. A higher concentration of energy cells is efficient but takes a toll on your pocket. For better usability, it is important to have notable storage capacity in a lighter container.
We make a similar observation by comparing the results from the two most unequally distributed groups in this analysis. 5 of the 7 experts interviewed by Baker et al. in 2010 are from academia and the average estimate of battery cost among experts is 265 $ (kW h) −1 for 2020, an optimistic estimate at the time.
The findings reveal that the push to commercialize solid state batteries is well underway with industries from automotive to storage betting on the technology.
