[Show full abstract] Floating Photovoltaics (FPVs) is an upcoming extension of the solar energy sector and has been deployed in many countries to make use of the vast open water spaces available (reducing land use for PV) and to generate clean energy for nearby communities.
A detailed review of floating photovoltaic (FPV) technology was published in 2019. It speaks about the potential of efficient operation of photovoltaic (PV) panels and their utilization to reduce water evaporation [ 4 ].
Abstract: Floating solar power plant is an innovative approach of using photovoltaic modules on water infrastructures to conserve the land along with increase in efficiency of the module. Additionally, the water is also conserved due to reduction in evaporation of water from the water body.
Another study on the state of Ceara in Brazil concluded that as high as 18.8% of the electrical needs of the state of 8.8 million inhabitants can be met by installation of cooled floating solar panels, which were also found to yield 12.5% more than their ground-mounted counterparts .
However, emerging PV technology over water bodies through floating solar panels can resolve this challenge and additionally leads to operation of the panels at low temperature, improving the energy generation efficiency and insulating water bodies to account for reduction in evaporation loss. The model increased water and energy supply for agriculture through photovoltaic panel rainwater harvesting, and achieved the objectives of reducing resource inputs and increasing economic benefits by adjusting planting structures.
