One of the most striking details in this year’s report is that wind and solar, when combined, added more new energy to the global mix in 2023 than any other source, as shown in the figure below. The combined 4.9EJ of new energy from wind and solar in 2023 accounted for 40% of the overall increase in global demand, ahead of oil (39%) and coal (20%).
In the IEA modelling, wind and solar are vital linchpins, providing 75% of the increase in clean power from now to 2050. Interconnections, networks, demand-side management and storage will all play a vital role alongside this deployment of clean power, and they will all need to expand to support the energy transition.
The expansion of wind and solar is expected to continue and even accelerate – particularly if the global goal of tripling renewable capacity by 2030 is to be met. Combined with a recovery in global hydropower output, following a series of major droughts, this could force fossil fuel power into the beginning of structural decline in 2024.
All told, 2023 saw unprecedented wind and solar growth in China. The unabated wave of construction guarantees that China will continue leading in wind and solar installation in the near future, far ahead of the rest of the world.
If all the electricity from wind and solar instead came from fossil generation, power sector emissions would have been 20% higher in 2022. The growth alone in wind and solar generation (+557 TWh) met 80% of global electricity demand growth in 2022 (+694 TWh).
The growth alone in wind and solar generation (+557 TWh) met 80% of global electricity demand growth in 2022 (+694 TWh). Clean power growth is likely to exceed electricity demand growth in 2023; this would be the first year for this to happen outside of a recession.
The Rise of Wind and Solar Energy in Sustainable Power Generation

Why wind and solar are key solutions to combat climate change
Solar and wind power costs have been declining rapidly. During the decade to 2020, the cost of wind and solar power fell by 55% and 85%, respectively. The cost of batteries, increasingly used to store renewable electricity, also fell by 85% over the same time period. Overall, wind and solar costs have continued to fall since 2020 despite supply chain issues …

Why wind and solar are key solutions to combat climate change
Once installed, virtually no greenhouse gases are emitted as a result of wind and solar power generation, and they pay off the energy related to their manufacturing and construction within a matter of months. Their existence prevents the continuous burning of fossil fuels for decades.
