Lithium-ion batteries are well known in numerous commercial applications. Using accurate and efficient models, system designers can predict the behavior of batteries and optimize the associated performance management. Model-based development comprises the investigation of electrical, electro-chemical, thermal, and aging characteristics.
Moreover, examples of equivalent circuit models of Lithium-ion batteries are covered. Equivalent circuit topolo-gies are introduced and compared according to the previously introduced criteria. An experimental sequence to model a 20Ah cell is presented and the results are used for the pur-poses of powerline communication.
Also known as “white”, “black” and “grey” boxes, respec-tively, the nature and characteristics of these model types are compared. Since the Li-ion battery cell is a thermo-electro-chemical system, the models are either in the thermal or in the electrochemical state-space.
Lithium-ion battery electrochemical and thermal dynamics are comprehensively reviewed. Multiscale modeling is analyzed, considering physical limits and computational costs. Systematic physics-based model comparison: strengths and limitations are detailed. Scale-specific physical complexities are schematized for clarity.
Thoroughly studying the Li-ion batteries across various scales, a wide range of advanced modeling approaches have been developed. Electrochemical models describe chemical reactions occurring inside the battery and capture the Li-ion transport. On the other hand, electrical models use a range of electrical components to form a circuit network.
In this study, it was discussed that distributed energy generation represents a significant contribution to the use of renewable energies. By utilizing lithium-ion batteries to store electrical energy in these systems, there is a need to provide appropriate battery models for the design of advanced power managements in the future.
