What is Decay? Decay is the re-circulation of current within a motor driver that uses pulse-width modulation (PMW). The inductive nature of DC motors means that they will oppose any change in the current run through them. Therefore, when the current is terminated, the resulting spikes in voltage can potentially damage the driver.
Their massive capacitors absorb the brief over voltage. In 'slow decay' mode, the current flows through the two bottom FETs, which are on, and the motor voltage is near zero. The only voltage available to reduce current in the inductance is the voltage drop on the motor resistance and the FET resistance.
In the case of fast decay, the voltage in the circuit is reversed across the windings, which decreases the current at a much faster rate. In regards to DC motors, this is essential to prevent the motor from failing. The limitation of this technique, however, is that it produces a high power supply current ripple. Fig 2. Fast Decay
Current flow within the motor rises to the maximum when the switch is on and suddenly drops to zero when the switch is turned off. When a motor controller circuit acts like this switch, it is said to be operating the motor in Fast Decay Mode because current to the motor quickly decays.
Motor Recirculation Current Decay Mode is a special behavior of modern motor controller circuitry. Decay mode can be specified in CircuitPython code as either Slow Decay or Fast Decay. At a minimum, a simple on-off switch can be used to control a motor. When the switch is on, the power supply voltage is applied to the motor causing it to spin.
There are two ways to handle mixed decay mode in stepper motor drivers: fixed and adjustable. Fixed Mixed Decay Mode: Fixed mixed decay mode will time division multiplex a fast to slow decay ratio to a percentage that is preset into the core of the driver. For example 30% of the time on fast decay and 70% of remaining cycle time on slow decay.

Motor Capacitor FAQ
In some cases, due to a defect in a capacitor''s construction or sometimes caused by a non-capacitor related motor issue, a run capacitor will bulge from internal pressure. For most modern run capacitor designs, this will open the circuit, disconnecting the internal spiral membrane as a protective measure to prevent the capacitor from popping open.
