The components of the smart grid include renewable sources and controllable loads. Due to the controllable feature of the load, various changes occur with respect to the voltage values and harmonics. Therefore, power quality (PQ) issues with respect to smart grids become a major topic is explained.
Power quality issues and mitigation have emerged as serious challenges and issues facing electric utilities and industrial/commercial/residential users . Various FACTS devices and control strategies can help to mitigate power quality problems. For efficient use of power system resources the concept of FACTS was introduced in the late 1980's.
Generally, poor power quality may result in increased power losses, undesirable behavior of equipment, and interference with nearby communication lines. Widespread use of power electronics further burdens the power systems by generating harmonics in the voltages and currents along with increased reactive current .
Smart grid systems utilize innovations like IoT, AI, data analysis, WSN, and others to alleviate power quality issues. In summary, the five phases of smart grid systems used to assess power quality issues are depicted in Figure 7.
Overview of power quality and facts devices in electrical networks Power quality issues are manifested as distorted voltage and current waveforms and/or frequency deviations that may cause failure or mal-operation of customer equipment.
Voltage sag and brief interruptions are thought to be the two most common and hazardous types of transient power quality concerns. An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) called a solid-state transfer switch (SSTS) can greatly reduce the depth and duration of voltage sag.
