According to Green NCAP [↗] and the University of Technology Sydney [ABC ↗], both project a typical lithium-ion EV battery pack will last for an average of 16 years, with the former estimating 240,000 kilometres driven. Which electric car battery technology is best? We break it down
Like all batteries, the cells that power an EV will degrade over time. However, our data shows that while battery degradation in EVs is an issue, it’s not as bad as you might think. In our survey, we asked over 3,000* owners of EVs to tell us by how much the range of their car had decreased since they bought it. *Source: Latest Which?
EV batteries – regardless of what type – will eventually reach their end-of-life. This is true for combustion cars, too. There’s no guarantee that an old petrol or diesel car will be less expensive to get back on the road than an EV with a few degraded battery cells, which can be individually replaced.
Most EVs use lithium-ion batteries. These degrade over hundreds of charge/use cycles, becoming less effective in the process. However, drivers can expect upwards of 10 years or 100,000 miles of use – with reports of twice that distance – from an electric car. As such, the lifespan of an EV is not dissimilar to a conventional petrol or diesel model.
Rapid charging is the quickest way to refill an EV battery, and the fastest public charge points can top them up to 80% in 30-40 minutes. EVs have sophisticated battery management systems to help calm the effects of rapid charging and protect the batteries from overcharging.
Most electric cars use lithium-ion batteries – the same as the ones in your laptop or smartphone – and these batteries tend to lose some of their capacity over the course of their lives. However, while your phone’s battery and the one in your electric car have many similarities, there are significant differences which affect degradation.
